A Platform for Translational Science

The Indian Academy of Biomedical Sciences (IABS) is a registered scientific organization established to promote excellence in biomedical and translational research in India. The Academy was conceived by scientists from India and abroad, with Prof. Hari S. Sharma and Prof. Abbas Ali Mahdi playing central roles in its establishment. IABS is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, with Registration No. 2826-2011-2012. Its principal objective is to promote research that connects basic biomedical discoveries with clinical applications, particularly in the understanding, diagnosis, prevention and management of human diseases.

The Academy provides a common platform for clinicians, biomedical scientists, academicians, research scholars, students and industry professionals to exchange scientific knowledge, present their research, establish collaborations and discuss emerging developments. In addition to annual conferences, IABS has organized workshops, symposia, CMEs and other academic activities at institutions across India. Its activities increasingly emphasize translational research, multidisciplinary collaboration and the development of young researchers.Β

Our Origins 2012

Establishment and First Annual Meeting

The origins of IABS can be traced to 2012, when the Academy was formally established and its First Annual Conference was organized at King George's Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, in association with an International Symposium on Advances and Applications of Molecular Biology in Clinical Research. Contemporary records identify this as the 1st Annual Conference of the Indian Academy of Biomedical Sciences.

The Academy's early development was strongly associated with Prof. Abbas Ali Mahdi of KGMU, Lucknow, and Prof. Hari S. Sharma, who were instrumental in developing the concept of an academy focused on biomedical and translational sciences.
